Since 1678 Bogenšperk Castle was a cultural centre where Valvasor established a rich library, founded a workshop and a printing press for copperplate engraving, gathered a number of masters (painters, and copperplate engravers) from Holland and Germany, as well as writers (among them was Pavao Ritter Vitezović) who cooperated on the capital encyclopaedia The Glory of the Duchy of Carniola, published in 1689 in four volumes. That encyclopaedia remains an important source for geographical, historical and ethnographical research of the area of Carniola, Istria and Liburnia.
