Development of Definitions of Terms Astronomy, Physics and Mathematics in Croatian Monolingual Dictionaries
Keywords:
definition, astronomy, physics, mathematics, dictionaryAbstract
By analysing definitions of the words astronomy, physics and mathematics found in Croatian and English monolingual dictionaries, this article deals with the problem of defining scientific terms in general, and with the issues of defining the terms astronomy, physics and mathematics. It also proposes ways of improving definitions of scientific terms in dictionaries and advocates the formal logic approach to defining specialized terms (as opposed to the shorter, lexicographic approach).?In the case of extended definition (enumeration of branch, type, areas of interest etc.), the article is in favour of scientific and not?colloquial division/branch. Likewise, expert review of definitions is proposed so as to harmonise them with the developments in science. The article proposes the »ideal definitions« of astronomy, physics and mathematics.
